I'm not sure if its safe. But I work at a Golf course and a coworker dared me to eat one I found in some rotten wood. So I did. It didnt taste bad other than the pasty texture of its insides. It may just be psychological but I felt more energetic afterwords and I didnt feel ill in any way. However, eating them in abundance may be a different story. Someone told me you had to de-vein them before eating them or you can get sick. I highly doubt it's true but you never know.
