I was pruning our Butterfly Bushes wearing cutoff shorts, t-shirt and a pair of work boots with no socks. I did not tie up my laces. I felt a piece of the bush fall between my ankle and my boot. The next thing I felt was a burning pain on my ankle. I took my boot off and saw a rash that spread about one inch across my ankle. it took almost two weeks for it to heal and it still itches today three weeks later.

∙ 8y agoSome people are more sensitive than others to butterfly weed. It is a good idea to wear gloves and long sleeves whenever you prune. It is best to prune butterfly weed in early spring.
