I was pruning our Butterfly Bushes wearing cutoff shorts, t-shirt and a pair of work boots with no socks. I did not tie up my laces. I felt a piece of the bush fall between my ankle and my boot. The next thing I felt was a burning pain on my ankle. I took my boot off and saw a rash that spread about one inch across my ankle. it took almost two weeks for it to heal and it still itches today three weeks later.

Some people are more sensitive than others to butterfly weed. It is a good idea to wear gloves and long sleeves whenever you prune. It is best to prune butterfly weed in early spring.
