I had the same question when I bought my Nook 1st Edition last month. No, you can not get apps on it. The Nook 1st edition is just not what you want to get if you are looking for fun and games. It literally is best for just reading. Even the internet isn't that good, because most the screen isn't touch screen, and it's black and white.
If you would like apps, I recommend the Nook Color. Even though the Nook Color is much more pricey, it does include the ability to download apps and games. The Nook 1st Edition is not a tablet-like thing, and it shouldn't be treated as one.
I just sold my Nook 1st Edition yesterday in order to buy a Nook Color. Is does cost muuuuccchhh more, but I really feel it's worth it. I'm one of those girls that likes to read, but is interested in the apps too. If you are like me, get the Nook Color.
So if you really want the Nook 1st Edition, I guess your gonna be stuck with the two games that are already on it: Sudoku and Chess.
