It depends upon the type of injury, and upon whether or not you have received a tetanus vaccine within the past 10 years. (1) According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, you should seek medical attention immediately if you have an injury that is "deep and dirty" and if you haven't received a tetanus vaccine within the past 10 years. (2) If you have a deep or dirty injury and have received a tetanus vaccine within the past 10 years, you should seek medical attention within 24 hours. Most physicians will want to give you an injection of tetanus immune globulin, a fast-acting protection against infection that is superior to the ordinary vaccine but won't work if it isn't received promptly. You DO NOT want to get tetanus; it's a nasty disease even if it doesn't kill you! There's no cure, and the medical treatment essentially involves trying to keep you alive while the disease runs its painful course. There are people who say that getting medical help within 72 hours is soon enough. There are people claiming to be doctors who say that tetanus vaccinations are neither helpful, necessary nor advisable. There is widespread agreement in the mainstream medical community that (1) and (2) above are the best advice you can get.
