almonds are a fruit like and related to the peach. almond trees do not like wet feet so don't do well where they may be in mud for part of the spring when they're trying to get growing. they are also subject to blight that will kill them in no time. However, some people have had good results in Canada. a few on Vancouver Island to be exact. and some in the interior. Suppliers are hard to find and government regulations restricting their movements will get in you way when you do find a supplier. "Hales hardy" can even stand minus 20 temp. with a little cover mulch.
