Do you have to have a BS in psychology to get a Masters in psychology?

No, having a Bachelor's degree in psychology is not always required to pursue a Master's in psychology. Some programs may accept students with a Bachelor's degree in a related field or with relevant experience. However, having a background in psychology can potentially help in meeting prerequisite courses and understanding the coursework.

In what order do you list your multiple degrees- eg BS MS Ph.D?

You list accomplishments from least to highest, unless they are in the same field. For multiple degrees in the same field, the terminal degree is the only one listed. For example: A) Joe Smith obtained her BA in Psychology, than an MS in Psychology, followed by a PhD in Psychology. His entry would be: Joe Smith, PhD B) Jane Smith obtained a BA in Psychology, an MBA in Business and an MS in Psychology, and a PhD in Psychology. Her listing would be: Jane Smith, MBA, PhD Some rules about least to highest: an academic degree (e.g. MS or MA, PhD) is higher than a practical degree (e.g. MBA is listed before MS). Finally, (I believe this is correct), any licenses held are at the end (A registered nurse who maintains a license to practice and holds a PhD would list PhD, RN). I'm not sure how this works with an MD, which is technically a practical degree but is also a license to practice...perhaps that's why it's so common to see it both ways. The previous entry stated: It is generally accepted that one lists accomplishments from least to highest. Thus BA, BS, MA, PhD.

What does PhD stand for?

PhD is an abbreviation for "Doctor of Philosophy" (Philosophiae Doctor). The reason for the name is historical. Most universities used to have only four majors: divinity, law, medicine, and philosophy. All other modern subjects (such as physics, English, math) were part of philosophy, and so most subjects still use PhD as their doctoral degree. To receive a PhD you first must receive a BA or BS degree (4 year undergraduate degree). You then apply for a Master's degree and then apply to be accepted to a PhD program. Some PhD programs combine the Master's and PhD into one.

Must you have a Bachelors degree in Psychology to eventually pursue a Ph.D in Psychology?

Absolutely, yes. You need a BA in order to apply to doctoral, graduate school programs. Not true. You can have a BA or BS in something else, as long as its "somewhat" related. Though, one thing is required: that is, you must take all the recommended courses. For example, most PhD programs want to see a developmental psych class, a research class, an intro class, an abnormal class and a statisitics class (if I left anything out, let me know). If you satisfy these requirements, but decide to be a philosophy major or something, you can still get accepted to a doctoral program. It might be a little more difficult, but you still have a chance. I know a lady that was 42, and graduated with her BS in nursing and worked as a nurse for 20 years. She went back to school, took the required undergrad classes and got accepted to a doctoral program, even though she had a BS in nursing. They actually liked the fact that she had experience of 20 years working with people. I had a B.A. in philosophy, and went on to get my Ph.D. in psychology. However, it is true that most Ph.D. programs want to see that you've taken the core courses of a psychology major. That's why I got my M.A. in psychology before getting accepted into my Ph.D. program. I have a B.A in psychology and philosophy, but I went for my M.A. in psychology just to strengthen my application before applying for the PhD in clinical psych.
