Religion, is our way of interpreting the faith we have in God. As such, it is a creation of our own minds, and not necessarily that of God.

I would suggest you follow a religion if you really believe in it. Note that some religions don't believe in gods; for example, I heard that some branches of Buddhism don't. But if some religion has beliefs that you don't share, I don't really see the point of following such a religion.

Of course you can believe in God without religion. Religion is just a kindergarten, you need it to learn the basics the ABC but once when you learn the basics you can let go of religion, you don't have to change your religion but you can go beyond religion into the university of spirituality. You realize God in the temple of your heart, you go beyond temple and church, you go in search of the reality, this is known as God-realization. God-realization doesn't need religion, it just grows as on the foundation of religion. Just like we need Kindergarten to teach us the basics, but once we know the basics we can go beyond religion to realize God.
