A direct representation of God in a picture is both forbidden and misleading, since God has no image (Deuteronomy ch. 5).

They didn't preserve their religion. The Bible tells us that time and time again the Jews deviated from what God gave them but God used adversity/opression to bring them back to His ways. So you can say it was god who preserved the Jewish religion.
