Emotions are not something that you inherit. You can learn ways of handling life from your parents, both healthy ways and unhealthy ways. An anxious parent might teach a child to worry and be timid. You can also unlearn anything taught during your childhood, which is a good thing. This is what therapy is all about.

Emotions are transient, like the frustration you may have struggling to open some canned peaches, or the fleeting joy of tasting the sweetness inside. On the other hand, moods persist longer. This is why, when you have been sad for a very long time, unjustifiably long after you buried your goldfish, for example, you may be diagnosed with a "Mood Disorder," like depression. Even someone with a chronic mood disorder of depression can experience positive emotions, like joy.
