While you may visit services of any ward or branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church), members are asked to attend their assigned congregation most of the time. Ward boundaries are drawn geographically, taking into account driving distance to the church as well as the number of practicing members in the congregation. Members of the church will have their membership records held at their home ward, and are expected to have callings in that ward, pay tithing to that ward, and have the Bishop of that ward as their local church authority.
Occassionally, you may be able to have your records sent to a different ward. This usually happens in the case of attending a special language ward/branch or a singles ward, but can happen for other reasons as well. Some cases I have seen were a youth attending church with extended family rather than alone in his assigned ward and a troubled divorce in which both husband and wife lived in the same ward boundaries. If you feel you need to be a member of a ward that is not your assigned ward, you will need to discuss that issue with your bishop and see if you can have your records transferred.
