A high school diploma or GED is required to join the US Army.
You may join any branch of the military at 17 1/2 with a parent's signature and a highschool diploma/GED. However, You may not join the Marines, Navy, or Airforce without a highschool diploma or GED, but the Army offers a 4-10 week GED program you can join. Upon completion you receive a GED and are then sent to basic training.

The Army requires a high school diploma OR its equivalent. Keep in mind that Army Recruitment Command has limits on the number of GED grads they may enlist. Talk to your recruiter to determine the best course of action for you to take.
If you are male or female, a high school/GED grad, and are 18 you can join the army. That is all you need.
The Army does not require a high school diploma or GED to enlist, but most of the other branches of service do.
That waiver is almost impossible to gain.
