You replace the toilet as a whole item. You cannot take a tank from one type and put it on another.

As far as i know, you cannot buy just the toilet lid. Either you can ask at certain scrap dealers or you will have to buy a new cistern, if only it is a low level. Otherwise if it is a close coupled sytem you will have to replace the entire toilet.
They weaken the little plastic parts inside the tank so they break. I learned this when I had to replace the insides of my tank. The chemical in the water corrodes the plastic.

The width of a toilet tank can vary in size. The average width of a toilet tank is about 18 inches.
You should be able to take the old tank off and mesure the distance of the mounting bolt holes and mesure the diamiter of the water hole then go to home depot and mesure some of the tanks they have. I diagree with the previous answer. By the way, it's spelled: measure. Anyway, if you have a 1.6 gallon toilet tank, you should replace it with the same brand. Different manufacturers tanks will NOT work with just any toilet. If you have the old style toilet e.g. 3.5 to 5.0 gallon tank, you would have to find a junk dealer who would have the exact same type of tank.
First check to see if the valve for the water supply is turned on. If that isn't the problem you may need to replace the tank water valve, they do wear out and are not that expensive or difficult to replace.
