Learning a language depends on immersion as well as proper teaching. While a college course will give you the technical and basic aspects, only spending time in an area where it is the standard will give you the subtlies and nuances of a natural speaker; the same goes for being immersed with no formal training, for example you will only get specific vocabulary instead of things like grammar and syntax.
