Yes, but that would eliminate about half of your advance curve, which you need.
Use a timing light and turning the distributor. Timing marks (numbers) are in the crankshaft pulley area and the line is on the balancer (next to pulley). Make sure you disconnect the vacumm line to the advance on the distributor while timing and plug the hose while timing. 4BTDC auto trany, TDC standard trany. If the motor is old & worn you can leave the distributor slightly loose & go for a drive and time it manually (with advance hooked up & up to operation temp) to where it won't ping on acceleration and has decent performance.

I would like to inform you that I would like to request to take my annual leave in advance of an entitlement accruing.
For plugs i'd try em out with .30 with your points type or .45 if you went to an HEI. Gap for points, leave em be from the day they were new i'd say. The spark plug gap is .035. The point setting is 017 or 30 degrees dwell. The timing with the vacuum advance disconnected is 4 degrees.

Too much timing?
Timing Chain, several chains and sprockets involved. Leave it to the pros.
you can get the tool that removes the rear calipers from any autozone or advance auto parts. they rent it to you and you leave a deposit. the tool is designed to turn the caliper as it is being pushed in. if this tool is not used the caliper will fail.
A long block comes with everything but the intake, Sometimes they will leave the sheet medal off, Oil pan, valve covers, Timing cover. A short block will be just the block, crank, rods and pistons and cam shaft, Timing gears No heads or sheet medal.
No, they had no advance warning. Some escape, and some didn't. The famous Schindler was a great help.
The underhood label on mine says 0 degrees for both manual and auto trans. I just set mine to 0, but it doesn't seem to be running right. I've heard there's a timing wire that needs to be unplugged before checking the timing. If anyone knows what that is, it would help us both out. If your motor has the hei with the external coil, you remove the four pin connector on the dist. leave the other one connected. This shuts off the est and you should be able to time the motor.
The Germans left because they did not want to be caught by the Soviet advance.
