You should ask your doctor. I believe it will cause serious bleeding, and will possibly get some type of infection from it. I left mine in for a yr and 1/2 longer than the prescribed time and i am fine i had no problems. It just becomes inactive. I did although get pregnant during that time and had it removed to avoid any complications to my pregnancy.
