No, there is powdered milk and sugar in the mix and not as much cocoa. It would never have enough chocolate flavor.

Well, this is true, it wont have as much chocolate flavor but yes you can substitute it. Double or quadruple the the amount of cocoa powder for Hot Chocolate mix (taking out the marshmallows) (depending on your tastes) and use about 1/4 the sugar needed in the recipe. (I just made chocolate no bakes without milk and hot chocolate mix and they taste great!) I hope this helps, if you are trying to sub it in a dough mix be aware that since you will have to use more hot chocolate powder than you would cocoa you may want to mix the powder with whatever liquids you have to work with in the recipe first (to dissolve the powder and keep it from getting cakey and dry). If that doesn't work add a small amount of water or milk to the mix to get it to the right consistency. :) Hope this helped.

I wouldn't suggest it because hot cocoa isn't as strong and doesn't have enough chocolate.

No. Hot cocoa is liquid, while cocoa powder is not. Also the heat in "hot cocoa" would activate the leavening too quickly, resulting in a flat product. "Hot cocoa mix" would not work because it contains a high percentage of sugar with a low percentage of cocoa powder.

I've just tried this myself and the short answer is, yes!

However, as hot chocolate already has sugar in it I didn't use quite so much icing sugar as I would have done using cocoa powder.

This is the recipe I used:

  • 3oz butter, softened

  • 4.3oz icing sugar

  • 2oz hot chocolate powder, sifted

  • 1.5 tbsp milk

  1. Beat the butter in a large bowl until soft. Add half of the icing sugar and beat until smooth.

  2. Add the remaining icing sugar, hot chocolate powder and one tablespoon of the milk and beat until creamy. Beat in the rest of the milk if necessary to loosen the icing.

  • 2 8-ounce (250 ml) cups whole milk
  • 3 ounces=3 squares (93 gr) Baking Chocolate
  • 1/3-1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cornstarch
Preparation:

Pour the milk into a medium saucepan and add the cornstarch. Whisk to dissolve the cornstarch. Once the cornstarch is dissolved, heat the milk on medium heat just until it boils, then remove from heat. Add the chocolate squares immediately and begin stirring until the chocolate is completely melted. Pour the sugar into the chocolate milk mixture and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Place the pan back on the stove on medium low heat, stirring slowly, but constantly. (Do not cook the mixture over high heat because it may cause lumping.) Taste the chocolate for sweetness and add more sugar if necessary. The mixture should thicken quickly. As soon as you see it thicken, remove the pan from the heat so the cornstarch will not thin. Ladle immediately into cups and serve piping hot.

Note: Be sure to use a clean spoon every time you taste the chocolate. Enzymes from your mouth can cause a thickened cornstarch mixture to thin.

Cocoa usually refers to pure cocoa powder, but can refer to a hot chocolate drink. However Ovaltine is a malted drink, not a hot chocolate. (Hot chocolate's have not malt in them). So Ovaltine it is not cocoa, by either meaning.

Is cocoa butter and cocoa powder the same thing?

Usually yes. Some recipes specify "baking" cocoa powder just so that nobody gets confused and uses "drinking chocolate mix" instead (since this contains sugar and milk powder which would throw off the recipe).

Can you substitute semi-sweet baking chocolate for cocoa?

If you mean the packages of cocoa that is made for hot chocolate, no. If you mean the brown cocoa powder made by Hershey's, yes. You have to add more sugar because it's very bitter.

Can you use hot chocolate mix for semisweet chocolate?

Probably somehow but i wouldn't recommend it! i bet it wouldn't taste very good! Hot chocolate mix is very full of sugar, only a small amount of cocoa and is a powder. Semisweet chocolate is a solid and has butter/oil in it and much more cocoa. You'd be better off using cocoa and butter... google substituting cocoa for chocolate for an exact recipe of what to sub.
