Computers automatically default to the built-in display on power-up. It's part of the BIOS (binary in/out system) & POST (power-on self test) routines. That's simply because it's 'logical' for the computer to need to use the display it was provided with at manufacture. The only way to make it default to an external display - would be to have the computer automatically detect if an external monitor is plugged in. That would require extra software.
Usually, it is run by an engine or motor. On computers, thousands of tiny switches are flicked automatically to make certain lights do this on the monitor screen, creating an image.
If the IBM laptop you use has a VGA port you just connect your monitor cable directly to the port. Then turn on the laptop and it should install the drivers needed to use the external monitor automatically. If you laptop does not have a VGA port then you will need a "Laptop replica port" to add the VGA port so you can connect the monitor.
The most popular monitor calibration software on the market is Calibrize. It is freeware so you can just go ahead and download it. Though it is actually recommended that you calibrate your monitor manually. Software can't measure daylight and other external variables.
ATS's constantly monitor the primary and secondary sources of power. When the primary source of power goes out, and the secondary is available, the unit automatically switches to the secondary power source. Some ATS's switch back to primary using the same logic, and some have to be manually switched back to primary. There are 'smart' switches that wait until the primary power source is available for a certain length of time (i.e. 2 minutes) until switching back, to avoid connecting to an unstable or intermittent utility source.
