You will bust off the TOP half of the grooved side. ( because there is nothing under it to support it while driving in the nail. Once the nail begins to hit the bottom edge it wont break because its supported and resting against the floor)

Dont nail the Tongue side with nothing under the tongue either because you'll bust off the tongue too. Always connect tongue and groove together so its a solid piece of wood before nailing, or fill in the gap so either end (tongue or groove) is supported from the floor up to where you're nailing.

What is tongue and groove?

The woodworking form "tongue and groove" (also tongue-in-groove) connects separate strips of wood, such as flooring, by having a milled extruding projection or ridge (tongue) on one side, that perfectly matches and fits into a milled concave recessed slot (groove) along the side of the adjacent board.

How do you make a hardwood floor?

to make a piece of oak flooring tat is 21/4"wide x3/4"thick which is standard flooring you must start with a straight piece of oak that is 21/2" wide and using a router bit that puts a tongue on the board 1/4" deep along the whole length of 1 side of the board. When that is complete do the same thing ontheright end of the board if the tongue you put on already is facing up looking at the board. Then using a 1/4" groove bit do the remaing sides of the board. So north=tongue south=groove east =tongue west=groove. There is a shallow channel ussually put on the bottom of the board for splinter blow out where the would bursts out of the bottom from the staple or nail when it sets

How do you fix a buckled wood floor?

First, make sure that the cause of the moisture has been corrected. Assuming the floor buckled due to moisture, first make sure that everything is thoroughly dry. The buckled boards will have to be removed, nails pulled and the boards replaced, as long as they haven't warped and are still straight. If the boards are not reuseable then new boards will have to be used. If the floor is still swelled, the last board to be installed may have to be cut down ("ripped") on a table saw in order to fit back in. If the flooring is tongue-and-groove, cut the bottom of the board off of the "groove" side leaving the top (or face) side uncut. Re-install the final board, face-nail it and fill the nail holes.

How to Install Engineered Flooring?

Engineered flooring is a layered composition flooring, meaning that the top, decorative layer is real hardwood and the subsequent layers are made of plywood or particle board. In short, engineered flooring provides the same look as real hardwood flooring without the associated cost and upkeep. To install engineered flooring, you will need a chop saw, table saw, a small hardwood flooring nailer and floor adhesive if installing the flooring over a concrete sub floor.1.) Measure the room you will be installing the engineered flooring in to calculate how much engineered flooring you will need. As a rule of thumb, purchase 10% more product than you originally anticipate to allow room for error.2.) If you are not working in a square room, you will want to install the flooring planks parallel to the longest wall.3.) Lay your first row of planks with the tongue side, or the side with the lip, facing toward you and away from the wall. The last piece of engineered flooring probably will not fit perfectly. Use your chop saw to cut it to size.4.) Lay your second row of planks with the groove side facing the tongue side of the previous row, interlocking the planks as you go. The last piece of engineered flooring probably will not fit perfectly. Use your chop saw to cut it to size.5.) Using your nailer, nail the tongue of each piece of flooring to your sub floor.**Note: if you are installing the engineered flooring over a concrete sub floor, you will want to glue the flooring to the floor rather than nail it.6.) Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 until all planks have been laid, staggering the pieces as you go for a more aesthetically pleasing look (i.e., you don’t want all of your seams to line up).7.) After all the flooring has been laid, you may find that you need to cut some pieces of engineered flooring in half long ways to fit against the baseboard. Use your table saw to cut these pieces to size.As a rule of thumb, a good installation will have a quarter inch or less gap around the perimeter of the room for quarter round to be installed.

How do you secret nail?

Secret nailing of tongue in groove boards is done by starting the nail at the junction of the top of the tongue and the edge of the board, and driving it on an angle into the thicker part of the board and down into the supporting timber beneath. These nails will be concealed by the groove of the next board as it seats over the tongue. A punch will be needed to drive the nail head flush into the board without damaging the board or tongue. In some timbers it is advisable to pre-drill a hole at a slightly smaller diameter than the nail in order to prevent the nail from splitting the board. In some furniture work and cabinetry, when a fixing is to be concealed, a chisel is used to partially cut a small shallow piece of timber (rectangular in shape, with a tapering underside and left fully attached on the opposite side to the start of the cut). This is carefully lifted up far enough to allow a screw, pin or nail to be fixed in the bottom of the cut. Then glue is applied in to cut and the piece of timber is pressed down flush, and sanded once the glue has dried. The cut made is just big enough to allow the fixing to be placed underneath.

What to do about tongue and groove paneling shrinkage?

Wow.... how old is your tongue & groove--to be honest this would not be a job for a novice.this job may involve taking all of the slabs off from that side of the wall and re-using them because this would be the easiest way to remedy the problem.T & G has a Tongue on one side and a Groove on the other side. When I do T & G I usually start with the "Tongue" facing left.. so when I place my last piece; my last piece may have a groove on the right side flushing into the wall on my right---but sometimes the slab has to be ripped down because the original slab is 4 inches wide but your last space to be filled was only 3 inches wide---and so the right side of that last piece is totally flat now because it was ripped down to accomodate the 3 inch space and does not have a groove on the end anymore. Please keep this in mind as I mention to you that you can probably tap a flat piece of wood strip down along the right side of the last piece placed and perhaps another flat piece of wood strip down along the left side of the first piece placed. I didn't even ask if the T & G was diagonal at a 48 inch height with chair rail, or if it is diagonal from cieling to base, or if its straight to 48 inches with chair rail. There is a lot to be looked at here..as I said; this is not a job for the novice. Please study How To Videos and you will see the involvement and perhaps you may even see the best way to remedy your situation.
