This is a very difficult question to answer, I found a site that encompasses said question quite nicely, here is an excerpt to get you started, and please go to the site, it answers your question very well:

In this guide, 'wood' refers to either the tree or the wood from the tree. Botanical name (or scientific name) is the genus and species of the tree. It's often difficult to pin down a wood as to an exact identity. There are a variety of reasons for this: One wood can have many common names. Sometimes a tree may have 20 or more commonly used names that change depending where it is grown and the local language. * Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) may also be called Bodare Us, Bodark, Bodeck, Bodock, Bois d'arc, Bowwood, Geelhout, Hedge, Hedge Apple, Hedge-plant, Horse Apple, Maclura, Mock Orange, Naranjo Chino, Osage, Osage Apple-tree, Rootwood, Wild Orange or Yellow-wood. The common name is different depending on whether the tree is harvested from the wild or plantation grown. * http://reviews.ebay.com/Wood-Common-Names-vs-Botanical-Names_W0QQugidZ10000000001402514?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:SEARCH:4

Spruce is used for Musical Instruments, wooden-framed airplanes and homebuilding.

Southern Yellow Pine is used for structural elements such as rafters and joists.

Red Oak is used for fine furniture.

Poplar is used in the frames of upholstered furniture.

Teak is used to make wooden handrails for ships.

Western Red Cedar is used to line closets.

Spanish Cedar is used to make cigar boxes.

Maple is used to make cutting boards.

Balsa is used to make model airplanes, and to make cores for yacht sides.

Cherry is used to make kitchen cabinets.

The problem with a question like this is a lot of woods are interchangeable. You can make wall studs from pine, spruce or fir. You can make floor joists out of yellow pine or Douglas fir. You can make kitchen cabinets out of just about any hardwood. Some woods are the only thing you can use in their application--they used to make the bearings for ship propeller shafts out of a wood called Lignum Vitae, which is harder than some metals, and Spanish Cedar has proven to be the perfect wood for cigar boxes. There are some woods you CAN'T use in certain applications; you should not make your horse's stall out of walnut because there's a chemical in walnut that is fatal to horses. Wine barrels are made from white oak, but they can't be made from red oak because red oak has "open grain"--you can blow through it--so all the wine would run out.

How many file format?

Hundreds, if not thousands. Pictures/Images alone have nearly 10 types of file formats (jpg, bmp16, bmp256, 24bit bmp, dib, gif, tiff, png). Other programs have unique file formats as well. Notepad, for example, uses .txt, while Word uses .doc, and MS Excel uses .xls. There are too many file formats to name, assuming you can even name them all.
