Pennsylvania lists three venomous (not poisonous, since venom is injected and not ingested), the Northern Copperhead, the Timber Rattlesnake and the Eastern Massasauga which is an endangered species.

The Massasauga is the most venomous and the least likely to be observed. Observed is the operative word since snake bites are a very rare occurrence and death resulting from snakebite happen only about 15 times each year in the United States according to the Center for Disease Control. Out of every 500 people who are bitten in the US by a venomous snake 499 will survive.

The US Department of Transportation reports that 'Bambi' collisions result in 130 US motorists dying each year. If you see a snake, remain calm and allow it to make its escape. If you are bitten seek medical treatment.

Twenty-one species of snakes are considered to be native to Pennsylvania. Each species has evolved to occupy a specific niche in our natural environment. Although they do indeed provide tangible benefits to man, they are worthy of respect and protection simply because they are wild animals and a part of the natural heritage of Pennsylvania.
