Many states or individual courts require it to be mailed in or paid in person, but many allow online payments. For example, you can pay online in Virginia by using the first related link below. That's for paying General District Court fines; General District Court is where most traffic cases are heard.

In case you're not in Virginia: I found this Virginia fine payment website at CourtReference, the second related link below. There's a page like this for every state; just go to the Choose a State box in the upper right of the CourtReference page, and select your state. Then go to the Choose a Court Resource Category and select Online Fine Payments. That will display links to all the fine payment websites in that state. If there isn't a statewide website, scroll down to your county and see if your local court has one.

Note that many online fine payment websites charge a small fee in addition to the actual fine amount.

Often, yes you can pay a traffic ticket online. It depends on what court issued the ticket. Some courts offer online payment options themselves, and other courts contract with a private company to process online traffic ticket payments. Almost all online payment services charge a "convenience" fee, which can be anywhere from $1.50 to $20.00.

In order to pay a traffic ticket online, it is helpful to know the court that has jurisdiction over the ticket. This information should be on the citation you received. To see if that court accepts online payments, visit the Online Courts Guide related link. Click on the appropriate state, then under the "Choose a Court Resource Category," go to "Online Fine Payments." Scroll down to the appropriate county, and there will be a list of courts in that county that accept online fine payments.

To make an online payment, you will generally need a credit or debit card. You may also need the citation number and amount owed. Some (but not all) online payment systems will let you look up citations by driver's license, vehicle information, or social security number.

If you have any questions, the best thing to do is contact the Clerk of the court with jurisdiction. You can look up court clerk contact information on the Online Courts Guide related link. Click on the appropriate state, then select the right county from the drop down menu. A directory of courts in that county will appear.

Use the first related link below to find the online payment website (under Statewide Online Payments, click Pay Traffic Tickets Online) to see if your county participates. Or scroll down to your county to see which courts have their own local online payment systems. The court should be printed on the ticket. You can find all Florida court contact information at the second related link below. Just select your county for a list of all courts in that county. If the court has a website, there will be a link to it; instructions for paying tickets are often found on court websites.
