[[The answer below is the original answer and is wrong.
Everything they say has a nugget of truth but none of it refers to PS3s. Firstly, I believe that Bluerays are not Region Coded anymore and if they are then the ps3 has the software to override it.
I know this because I recently moved to the states and, while I left my ps3 at home, i brought my games with me and they all play fine on my new North American ps3.
The only issue you will run into are with game codes, like EA's online access passes. These are region specific so if you order an American copy of, say, Battlefield 3 it will run fine on a EU console but the Online pass that comes with the game will not work if the PSN account is an EU account. I now have two PSN accounts on my ps3 for that reason, so I am able to play both my EU games and NAM games online.]]

Truly, it depends on the title. There is a chance that US material will not work on European equipment for two reasons.
First, commercial DVDs and Bluray discs (what the PS3 uses) are region-coded. A disc that is coded for North America will most likely only work on North American disc players. Likewise, European discs are restricted to European players. A lot of titles are region-free though, meaning they will play a disc from any region. These tend to be professional decks rather than domestic. Also, non-commercial discs do not have the region coding and can also be played on any player.
The breakdown:
Region A: Americas, Japan, Korea, and South East Asia.Region B: Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Australia
Region C: Russia, India, Mainland China, and Central Asia countries.
Go to http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=a http:http:ato check out whether movie titles are region-free or not.
Also, sometimes the special features are in Standard Definition (SD), which means that those could be in PAL format, and if you're in the US, your TV uses NTSC--not PAL--and vice versa for the UK. Therefore, there could be compatibility issues and you might not be able to watch some special features.
Second, North America operates on a 60Hz field rate, meaning that images are delivered to the screen 60 times each second. In Europe, the field rate is 50Hz. Color encoding is also different for analog signals. Many European players and monitors will adjust automatically if they see 60Hz content so this problem is not seen often with modern equipment.
The only way to be sure is to try it and see if your set up and/or title works. If it does, then it is a bonus for you.
There is no difference between a US PS3 game and a UK PS3 game.
You can if they are region free
the Xbox 360 plays movies
Never. Just because you are online does not change that the PS3 can not play a Xbox 360 game and it also can not go on Xbox Live. The games have the same title but the are not the same. They can not play each other anymore than you could decide to get the other consoles version and expect it to work on your console or either console to play the PC version of MW2.
If the Xbox 360 was free it Would be the Xbox 360 but since it's not it has to be the PS3
No. If you were to want to play with someone specific, you cannot, since the Xbox 360 does not have the friend code system. Matches with Call of duty are limited to the specific platform you are playing it on, e.g., you cannot play with someone with an Xbox if you are on a Wii. Only the Wii can play matches with other Wii owners, as is the same for the Xbox and the PS3.
