You need to reverse for 10ft or so after switching in to 2wd. The owner manual will have the exact distance needed, this takes to the torque off the lockers and allow them to properly disengage.
I put auto hubs in place of my manual ones on my 92 kick. there is a plate held by 4 screwes behind the hub that must be removed b4 the auto hubs will mount. but that is the only trick to it. do not remove the axle locking screws by accident our you will have one. 97has spring lock but other years be careful.
The best way to repair an auto locking hub is to throw it away and get manual hubs. You will get better mileage and when you lock them in you know the hubs are locked in.
remove the hub then remove the locking ringon inside of hub press hub and baring out then press hub out of inner baring surface reverse procedure to install.
Turn right or clock wise to lock hub and turn left or counter clockwise to unlock hub.
how do you remove automatic locking hub. Well to replace the rotor you must take off the hub. to take off the hub you remove the cap. then there is a snap ring you must push together and pull the inside of the hub out. After that you need a special socket that has 4 prongs on it. take the nut off. then pull the washer out and take off the other nut witch needs the same socket. then your rotor is free to come off just pull.
Remove the hub cap if equipped. Remove the snap ring holding the lock out hub (regular pliers will work). Pull old lock out hub off. It is sometimes necessary to carefully tap around the hub while pulling it. Insert replacement hub. Replace snap ring and hub cap.
