What dos the shaft do?

The intermediate shaft is the shaft going to the driver side wheel from the tranny. The shaft is suppose to eliminate what you call torque steer, It comes straight from the tranny and bolts to the engine block with a bearing race to hold the shaft and at that brace is where the half shaft, or drive shaft connects to the intermediate shaft and to the driver side hub.

How do you replace the driver's side windshield wiper motor which no longer rotates on a 1996 Ford Explorer when you can not even figure out how to get to the motor?

I think you're looking in the wrong place. Remove the two black grills the wiper arms poke out of. Remove the plastic sheet glued to the white panel near that driver side wiper arm. The motor is right there. Remove the three screws. Remove the little locking gizmo on the BOTTOM of the shaft - poke a screw driver onto the bottom part of it, spread it apart, then push it off the shaft perpendicar to the shaft. Don't lose it. Replace the Motor.
