An engine designed to run with leaded gas should not run on other than leaded gas. There are however some substitutes for lead that some gas stations sell.. Lead work so that it lubricates the engine and valves. No lead would over time make damage. A turbo engine might be designed for high octane fuel. If lead or no lead is not an issue, then the engine would/should simply perform a bit lower than normal/optimal.
