If the images are actually in the public domain, they can be incorporated into your artwork and sold. The use of those images in your artwork is subject to your own copyright, but the more general use is not.

For example, a cartoon of Abraham Lincoln that appeared in a Civil War era newspaper would be in the public domain, because the copyright would be run out. It could be incorporated into a book of the history of the civil war without any problem with ownership. Its placement on the page, its caption, and so on, are subject to current copyright, and if you published the book you would own them. But the original artwork is not copyrighted even though it appeared in your copyrighted book.

By the way, the book is a work of art, just as a painting is. In fact the code of a computer program is considered art under the copyright law.

Read it, in private. Quote limited excerpts in reviews or educational materials. Re-sell or loan it (or, notably, burn it). Virtually all other uses would require permission from the copyright holder.

What power allows congress to take private property for uses such as an interstate?

The concept of seizing private property (with compensation) for the public good is known as "eminent domain." Federal, state, and local governments are allowed to take property for government use, with the most common uses ff property taken by eminent domain are for government buildings and other facilities, public utilities, highways, railroads, and public safety. Water and air rights can also be taken. The Fifth Amendment imposes limitations on the exercise of eminent domain: the taking must be for public use and just compensation must be paid.

Where can you find public domain photos online for use on your website?

You can do an internet search for exactly that phrase, plus some descriptors (e.g., "public domain" photo kittens basket), but you'll still want to check on the licensing information on each image.Another option is to use royalty-free images which require a one-time fee, but tend to be of fairly decent quality.

whst is mean by copyright free?

Images in the public domain, such as NASA imagery, would be copyright-free. People often use "copyright-free" to describe the millions of images on Flickr that carry Creative Commons licenses, but this is technically incorrect. The images are still protected by copyright, they simply have extraordinarily broad licenses that allow many uses without further permission.

When will you need copyright permission?

If you are using materials that are not your original work, or aren't in the public domain, for uses not exempted in the law, you need permission from the rightsholder.

What are ways you can search for images to be used without copyright restrictions?

Images created by the federal government are not protected by copyright, so for example NASA imagery and photos from the Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System are free to use. Creative Commons-licensed images are protected by copyright, but issued with extraordinarily broad licenses that allow many uses without additional permission. Flickr allows searching within public domain images; on the search page, select "The Commons" or "US Government Works" from the dropdown menu to the left of the search box.
