In some sense you usually can, although brown sugar is normally added into recipes because it gives a more creamy, caramel flavour. Perhaps you could add a small amount of vanilla essence as well.

You can substitute it, but it is reccomended that you do not.

More information:

Brown sugar has quite a different flavor than granulated sugar which would not be appropriate for all baked products. It also has more moisture than granulated sugar, which is why it does not pour in the same way and needs to be "packed" for correct measurement. These factors should be taken into consideration before making any substitution.

Yes. The main difference between white and brown sugar is molasses. Mix in a little molasses to the white sugar (less than 1 tablespoon of molasses per cup of sugar- until it's about the same color as brown sugar (or a little darker) and most recipes will still work.The molassess will add the chewy texture to foods that brown sugar gives.

Not directly--brown sugar contains molasses that granulated sugar does not, and it would change the amount of liquid in the recipe. You could try it, though...it would probably be good.
