No. The Transaxle in a 1988-2006 Ford Taurus must use MERCON V. Both the AX4N and AX4S transaxle can ONLY use MERCON V. The power steering system also utilizes the MERCON V Fluid. The Power Steering system can ONLY use MERCON V.MERCON V is the latest MERCON Specification. All MERCON Fluids have been discontinued and replaced with the new MERCON V standard.IMPORTANT: Systems requiring MERCON V ARE NOTbackwards compatible with MERCON fluid. Do NOT use MERCON fluid in a system designed for use with MERCON V Fluid. However, Systems requiring MERCON fluid, can use MERCON V fluid. Depends on which transmission you have and if it is a Manual or Automatic. Some Ford manual transmissions use A/T fluid and some use Manual Lube. Below is a list of A/T's and what they use. Either Mercon or MV. Unless you have an owners manual which will tell you, or know the transmission you have, I suggest you call your local Ford dealer. MERCON V is a transmission fluid for Fords and DEXRON-VI is a fluid made for GMs. Mercon and Dexron are NOT, nor have they ever been, the same thing. People got the idea that they were because traditional ATF meets the specs of both. It doesn't mean that they have the same specs. Mercon V and Dexron VI are non-interchangeable. Always read the label of any ATF you plan to use. GM, Ford and Chrysler all use different fluids so make sure that what you choose is correct!
