Yes, it is possible. Not recommended. You meet much more useful companions for the quest throughout the storyline for Dead Money, and without the right companions; the whole DLC can get quite frustrating.

Step one: talk to Boone in the Novac dinosaur head. Step two: talk to him until you receive a quest in which his wife is missing. Step three: to complete the quest, go to the Novac visitor's center (the place where that lady stands behind the counter) and search the floor safe behind the counter. Step four: wear Boone's red cap and tell the lady to follow you to the dinosaur. Step five: after she is killed, talk to Boone again (be nice) and you should now be able to have him as a "friend".
