Of course you can! Here is how. First make sure that the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" option is checked in iTunes Preferences: • From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences. • In the resulting window, click the Advanced button. • Select the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checkbox. • Click OK. Once you've done that, follow the next set of steps to change your iTunes Music library location to the new drive and then consolidate your library to the new location. This not only copies your audio and media files over, it also retains your ratings and playlists. Note: If you move your music and media library to an external hard drive, you will need to have that drive connected to access your files. • Open iTunes. • From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences. • Click the Advanced button in the Preferences window. • Click the Change button in the iTunes Music folder location pane. • In the Change Music Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your new Music folder to be created. Note: By default, your iTunes Music folder is a folder named "iTunes Music" in ~/Music/iTunes/ where the tilde "~" represents your home directory. • Click the New Folder button in the Change Music Folder Location window. • In the New Folder window that appears, enter the name of the new iTunes Music folder. • Click Create. • Click Open in the Change Music Folder Location window. • Click OK in the Advanced window. • From the File menu, choose Library and then Consolidate Library... A message appears that says: "Consolidating your library will copy all of your music into the iTunes Music folder. This cannot be undone." • Click Consolidate. Important: This action copies all of your music and media files to the new location. There must be enough hard disk space available to copy all of your music and media files. • After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder. • Empty the Trash. Additional Information If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library).

Is it worth it to buy a usb 2.0 external hard drive even though it's slower than an internal hard drive?

If you're wanting to transfer data between machines the external drive might be worth it. Otherwise, an internal drive will be less trouble and tend to last a lot longer. My advice, go for it as there is no reason why a hard drive mounted externally shouldn't last the same as one mounted internally (the quality of the hard drive is more likely to determine that)& in my experience, transfer rates are perfectly acceptable! External drives have other great advantages: - Your data can be safeguarded from natural disasters, burglary etc by putting your external drive somewhere safe (not so easy to move the whole computer unless it

Can a computer run on an external hard drive only?

Yes, you should be able to install an operating to an external hard drive. You might have to set it to boot in the BIOS so you can install the OS. A computer needs an operating system to run, so as long as it is installed on a hard drive, it should not matter whether its internal or external. Remember, it depends on what port you are using depends on the speed, so if you have only usb, this will be a lot slower then your internal hard drive port. P ata, ide drive transfer speed- 133mb USB- 60mb Every port has a speed rating. So you don't want a slower port then your internal port.

Can you use external hard drive if main hard drive is down?

Some motherboards support boot from external USB drive amd/or eSATA. You need to check BIOS settings (the external drive should connected) to make sure that your computer is capable to do so. It the motherboard is capable then you can install operating system on the external drive (if it's an usb drive be ready for low performance).
