Find out what slots your computer has open. Typically PCI-E would be used for modern graphics cards, but depending the the age and model of your computer, you may find AGP slots as well as standard PCI slots used for graphics cards.
Find a graphics card that a) fits that slot and b) has drivers to work with your operating system. Purchase it.
Turn off your computer. Unplug it. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Open up the case, remove the cover over the port-hole on the back for where you're going to insert the graphics card. Plug the card in, also remembering to attach any power supply that may be needed (depending on the card, it may or may not need additional power). Close up the case. Start up the computer. Install the drivers for the new card.
Happy gaming.
Strongly recommend you find a step-by-step guide. There's like more than a million of them on the internet. If you don't feel comfortable taking your computer apart, and don't know what you're looking at when you do, I suggest you hire someone to do it for you. I serve the greater Seattle area (http://www.colecomputerservices.com), and there are many like me that serve whatever areas they live in. Shop around, and find someone that can do it for you and do it right unless you're comfortable with the possibility that you could cause irrevocable harm by doing something horribly wrong to your machine.
Most people upgrade their processor, ram, video, and sound cards for gaming.

Depends on what you want your computer to do. Upgrade RAM for processing power (like games, HD video graphics, etc.), upgrade memory storage to save input information. The other thing to consider is processing speed such as 1.8ghz vs2.4ghz. these processors can be replaced but at a higher cost then replacing the computer with a newer version.
That's correct, it will upgrade your video memory and not your system memory.
Yes all computer parts are generally environmentally friendly.
