Can you? Yes you can. Should you? Absolutely not. The 205/65-15 tire will have an overall diameter that is almost 2" smaller than the 225/70. Your speedometer will read 64.4 mph at 60 mph. Your engine will be turning 57 more rpms per mile and your fuel economy will suffer. You will also have 1" less contact patch on the road on each tire causing the tires to wear faster. Your handling and braking will also suffer. If you want to go to a wider tire then go to a 235/65-15 which will not cause any problems.

What other size tires are compatible with 205 65 r15?

Can you use 225 70r 15 instead of 205 70 r 15 on 84 cougar LS?

No. 225 and 205 describe the width of the tyre in millimetres. 70 describes the size of the tyre wall as a percentage of the tyre width (often referred to as "profile"). So the wall height of the 225 70 tyre will be greater than the height of the wall of the 205 70 tyre. This will make the circumference of the tyre greater, which will cause your speedometer and odometer to be inaccurate. If you want to increase the width of the tyre, you must reduce the profile accordingly. Your tyre retailer should be able to assist.

Can you use 225 tires instead of 205 width?

usually yes, but the ratio will need to be smaller to keep an accurate speedometer reading and ensure they fit in the wheel well. Foe example: a 225 60 15 tire is almost the same diameter as a 205 65 15 tire, the difference is so close the effect is negligible. However the 225 tire has just under one inch "wider" tread. Make sure it fits. A reputable tire shop can confirm the fit for your car over the phone.

What sizes other than 225 60R16 can be safely used on a 1994 Buick Regal Gran Sport?

The OEM size is 205/70-15. But I assume you want to stay with a 16" tire. If that be the case a 205/65-16 is much closer to the OEM size than the 225 tire.
