3d is 3d. its just 2 images one for left and one for right. RealD is one system for taking the 2 images and polarising them to block the opposite eye. Most home theatre systems have been using XpandD aka flicker or shutter, which uses a synchronised LCD shutter in the glasses to block opposite eye. JVC developed a polarising system for the home that uses alternating rows of polarising filters in the TV screen itself. this system allows you to use RealD glasses at home. however it also reduces the image quality in half, making your 1080 into 540 or standard def.

Why do RealD 3D glasses work differently forward than backward?
Experiment 1: hold both glasses in front of each other, facing away. Rotate one set while looking through both; the view won't be blacked out. Now turn one set around to face you and repeat. The view will be blacked at some angle. Experiment 2: Hold the glasses (one set, facing away from you) in front of a Notebook LCD screen (mine is a MacBook Pro) and rotate them. The colors will shift slightly (brownish to blueish) but will never black out for either eye. Now turn them around so they face you and repeat. At some angle both glasses will black out. Questions: - why does it matter if they face you or not? - why does rotation matter? (RealD-3D supposedly uses circularly polarized filters - should be rotation insensitive)

No, however the two most popular 3D technology companies in the theaters are RealD and Master Image. So your glasses have to correspond to their format. I know a company, Visual World Products, that makes 3D glasses that work on both formats perfectly.
