I think your query is about using Mercury.Yes one can use alcohol instead of mercury for temperature measurement.Mercury is used in such a vast scale because of its high expansion ratio at low temperature changes which a normal man can easily see,but mercury has got a limit, temperatures above its boiling point cant be measured using mercury.you will be surprised to know that for high temperature measurements metals like copper are used.
