If you are a UK Citizan you will have a National Insurance Number (NI Number) This will be one of the first requirements an employer must ask for BEFORE accepting you for employment. A British Citizan offering a passport does so as a form of identification. A UK driving licence with your picture on can also act as a form of identification.

To work in the EC you need a British Passport with your nationality marked as 'British Citizen'. The only exception to this is the British Colony of Gibraltar which is part of the EC. I believe subjects from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are also excluded unless they have a parent or grandparent who were born on the British main land, Northern Ireland or Gibraltar.
