Actually, china that is manufactured today is far more versitile than people realize. Many pieces are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe. That does not mean every brand or pattern will be, but some are. Look on the bottom of the dinner plate. If it says it's oven, microwave, or dishwasher safe, you can trust it. If it doesn't say anything, find out the brand and the pattern name and contact the manufacturer. If you can't figure out the pattern name, take the plate to a china dealer such as Bed, Bath and Beyond and ask.
