No, idiot.
An idiot he is not! and yes you can, it does not contain any harmful properties that will perish the seals and is of similar viscosity.
I found this out whilst driving my Ford Transit Connect through the city on a Sunday when the Power Steering feed pipe came loose and consequently threw all the oil out leaving me with very hard steering.
I drove to the nearest petrol station whom had everything for household needs but only engine oil and screen-wash in their vehicle department.
I then drove to the next which was no different, by now I was getting a smell from the power steering filler tank and so decided to buy a liter of vegetable oil as I knew engine oil would be to thick and may cause damage to the seals.
This got me home and then some, it was fine, perfect steering, I done around 200 miles and then bought some power steering fluid, emptied the veg oil, put some power steering oil in, run it through, emptied that and refilled again with power steering fluid.
I have no leaks and my steering is perfect.
Vegetable oil got me out of trouble and left no problems, plus it was only £1.53 and I still had some left for a few breakfasts!!
people who think outside the box are not idiots............idiot!

YES. your power steering pump is a hydraulic pump that pushes fluid through lines to make your wheels move. hydraulic fluid such as ATF or POWER STEERING FLUID is good for your power steering pump. it is a PUMP after all. OIL has the purpose of lubricating, and has very different qualities than hydraulic fluid. DO NOT put OIL in your power steering pump... put POWER STEERING FLUID or if you can't get power steering fluid AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID will do...
No. Put in power steering fluid.
power steering fluid. power steering fluid. power steering fluid.
yes. but do not use steering oil for trnsmission.
If you insert the oil in the tank, where power steering fluid should be, then yes, it´s harmful.
Each is designed for its own place in the vehicle. I would definitely avoid putting any power steering fluid in the crankcase. I would also avoid putting motor oil in the power steering. Power steering fluid is generally thinner than motor oil and would not be an advisable alternative to put in the crankcase. Now motor oil is thicker and can potentially damage components in the power steering with prolonged use. The detergents in motor oil may cause different issues with seals in the power steering, including leaks. On older vehicles the power steering generally called for automatic transmission fluid, but using power steering fluid in its place shouldn't hurt and may actually help.
the power steering fluid is in the cannister to the right of the oil filter and to the left of the air filter housing
What fluid? Engine oil, transmission oil, power steering oil, coolant fluid, brake fluid.
The oil is bad for your seals in the pump as well as the hoses. If you have oil in your power steering system you should have it flushed as soon as possible.
You will find the the right one in ur owner Manuel, mine is Volvo s80 and the recommended fluid was not power steering oil it was ATF automatic transmission fluid, when I asked about that at orally they said if u use power steering fluid it will rewind ur power steering system.
transmission oil
You will screw your steering system. You need to flush steering system ASAP. And of course do not drive with engine oil in steering.
