What is political independence?

A political independent is a person who is not affiliated with an organized political party. I am a registered voter but my Voter Registration Card lists my Party as "NPA" (No Party Affiliation). In my state, if I registered as a Democrat or Republican, I could vote in the party primaries for my stated party. Because I am an Independent, I cannot vote in primaries but I can vote in general elections and on referendums and non-partisan races.

What primaries only voters who claim a specific party affiliation before election day can vote for that party's candidates?

Closed primaries only allow voters who claim a specific party affiliation before election day to vote for that party's candidates. These voters must be registered with the party in order to participate in the primary election. Independent or unaffiliated voters are generally excluded from participating in closed primaries.

Can a republican vote for a democrat in the primary in OK?

No, you cannot. Oklahoma has a "closed" system for primaries, which means that you can only vote for a candidate from the political party in which you registered. So, if you are a registered Republican, you can only choose from Republican candidates in the primary. But in the general election, that changes; you will be free to vote for a candidate from whichever party you wish.

If you vote republican in the primary can you vote democratic at election time in the state of California?

No. In the primaries, the voter can only vote for those candidates associated to their party affiliation. In the general election however, anyone can vote for any candidate. Those registered as IND (Independent) cannot vote at all during the primaries, but can vote in the general elections come November.

Can you vote for one party in the primary and vote for another party in the general election?

Yes, for closed primaries you are only allowed to vote for candidates who are in the same party as the voter. In an open primary, like a general election, any registered voter is allowed to vote for the candidates on the ballot. The difference between open primaries and general elections is that open primaries include only candidates from one party that all registered voters can choose from, while in the general elections, candidates can come from several parties, with all registered voters eligible to choose the one of their choice, regardless of their primary choices.
