What are the three main types of military units?

Generally speaking they are, Navy (oldest service and called the Senior Service in Britain), Army and the Air Force (the newest service). In some countries there is a blurring of these units such as USAAF (United States Army Air Force) the Marines (soldiers who fight as an infantry unit at sea or on land). However within these three units there are innumerable divisions such as Infantry, cavalry (now usually known as armour), sappers, commandos, S.A.S., S.B.S. Specialist Raiding Forces (Rangers) S.E.A.L.s many of these are formed on early fighting groups such as cavalry, kommando (Boer Wars), Marines (Naval units as far back as Henry VIII) and so on. Others have been formed as experience (or some drop kick in power) dictated. Some I cannot for the life of me work out how or why they came into being. The Brandenburgers (German Unit and never used after SKORENSY got MUSSOLINI out of Italy under the Allies noses) The Special Air Service and the Special Boat Service (both do the same job on land and sea) and various others from around the world.

Why was rationing started?

During World War I, rationing was reduced simply because of the shortages of foodstuffs and other economic items caused by the war-effort. On both sides of the conflict, the naval and land (and even air) dimensions of the war caused normal importation and/or production of everyday items either to stop altogether or to be severely diminished, thereby causing shortages of one kind or another.
