His father died when John Smith was sixteen years old. Soon after that he served as a mercenary for France, fighting against Spain to free Holland. He also fought the Turks and was a prisoner of war, sold as a slave to a Turkish nobleman. After killing his captor he slowly started back to England, becoming involved in the voyage to the New World when he was around twenty-seven.
