The car could be knocking which is a very serious engine condition. The leaking and burning could have been a main seal blowing out and leaking engine oil, some of which fell on the hot exhaust and was burnt up. Generally a knock requires an engine rebuild or replacement. And if the main seal did go out, your engine may seize up from a lack of oil. Hope this helps.
I had that happen on a grand am and it was a bad wheel cylinder on the drivers side wheel in the back and it was leaking fluid and the brake pads were sticking and burning and really never realized it until the snow fell and the rear wheel would lock up when I hit the brake.
you have a bad ground
Lift the vehicle onto jack stands on the front. Shake the wheel and all front end components. Something May be worn or broken. Also roll the wheel by hand and check for noise or rough spots, as something in the braking system cloud be the culprit.

If you read your drivers training book and have common scene you should have no problem passing the drivers license test. A sample test is not something that you should be looking for.
