Was closed in 1993 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.
The base has since been designated by the EPA as a Priority SuperFund toxic waste site, following excavation of test pits which identified volatile organic compounds, SVOCs, dioxins and furans, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, and metals detected in the soil, ground water, and leachate in hidden, undocumented landfills there dating back to WWII. Record levels of cancer and birth defects in the local population have led some to nickname it "The Love Canal of the Midwest" and "Chanute Air Force Waste".

Chanute Air Force Base was created in 1917.
I am not certain but page 929 of the volume 53, number 6 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine from June 1930 has an article entitled "The West Point of the Air" which covers Air Corps training at Scott Field, near Belleville, Illinois and at Chanute Field, at Rantoul, Illinois. I have not seen this movie but given that it was supposed to take place in the 1930's and the date of this magazine issue, it's not improbable to think that it was Scott or Chanute Air Force Bases.ANS 2 - USAF Academy, Colorado Springs
