The base has since been designated by the EPA as a Priority SuperFund toxic waste site, following excavation of test pits which identified volatile organic compounds, SVOCs, dioxins and furans, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, and metals detected in the soil, ground water, and leachate in hidden, undocumented landfills there dating back to WWII. Record levels of cancer and birth defects in the local population have led some to nickname it "The Love Canal of the Midwest" and "Chanute Air Force Waste".
