CELs are usually related to the emissions control systems on OBDII compliant vehicles. One common reason for a CEL is fueling with the engine running. The engine performs a vacuum test which will throw a code if the fuel cap is open. Aside from the annoyance of the light, it's generally not a smart idea to fuel up while the engine is running.
A code reader can pull the code and shed a little light on the exact reason for the CEL, and stores such as Autozone have offered a free code reading service in the past.
