It's time to replace the thermostat. The obvious would be lack of coolant----but assuming you have checked that the possibility exists that you have a blown head gasket ---I know that you have a Chevy full size van (G 20) but know nothing about the year or mileage --that being said when the belt broke you may of severly overheated the engine---not good for any vehicle but very bad for old high milage motors
alternator needs to be replaced. battery also might be a problem due to the alternator not charging it
radiator plugged.or coolant low
If you temperature gauge is going up and down then you may have a problem with your sensor. You should take your car to a professional to ensure that you don't overheat your car.
I have the same problem on my 2002. I have replaced the relay switch, verified the fan kicks on, verified the upper radiator hose is hot. I am going to replace the thermostat to see if that helps...
Your temperature sensor needs to be replaced.
Yes it can cause it to overheat but first check your thermostat. That would be the 1st cheapist thing to do before you did anything else. I got an 85 regal(overheating) and the thermostat or the heater core is the problem im getting them both replaced tomorrow and will let know of how it runs.
There have been problems with the odometer displaying an error but no recalls for it. The instrument panel has to be repaired or replaced to fix the problem.
My blower would blow cold air at idle & engine would start to overheat, I replaced my thermostat & problem solved.
had a problem with my 2001 impala 3.8. dealer said it temperature sending unit, then water pump neither fixed the problem. finally replaced the thermaostat and that worked. don't know if that is your problem but may be something to think about.
check/replace spark plugs and wires
if the pump and thermostat have been replaced on a 2001 malibu and it overheats and the heat doesnt work now but the air does. do it need bleeding still , will air in the line still cause that problem...
