Sometimes "atom" bomb is also used to describe a hydrogen bomb. Strictly, historically speaking, the atom bomb works via the energy released when a heavy atom nucleus such as uranium is split (called nuclear fission). This is also the energy source for nuclear power stations. A hydrogen bomb works via the energy released on fusing (called nuclear fusion) two light atoms (such as hydrogen) together - the huge pressure needed is derived from an atom bomb. This situation arises because the atoms towards in the middle of the Periodic Table are more stable, than those nearer the ends. A lot of electricity is derived nowadays from nuclear fission (nuclear power stations) but no significant power has yet been derived from nuclear fusion, though a lot of work is being done on it.
A Hydrogen bomb is nearly 1000 times stronger than an atom bomb, the reason for this is the methods in which they are made. Atomic bombs are made from the process of nuclear fission, in which two atoms crash into each other releasing a chain reaction of exploding atoms, hence the supernova, and shockwave. For a hydrogen bomb the process used is nuclear fusion, in which two atoms are fused. In this case, two hydrogen atoms are used. These two hydrogen atoms form a helium atom while releasing an enormous amount of energy. Leading to my point that a hydrogen bomb can destroy everything in a radius of about 40 miles.
A hydrogen bomb is approximately 4.87 times more powerful than an atom bomb. What makes these bombs so powerful is that hydrogen is an extremely inflammable and explosive gas. When the bomb is released, the special coating used on its shell captures tons of friction, which heats the bomb. Then the detonator button is pressed, and the bomb blows up. Also, if the bomb comes in contact with the ground, before the button is pressed, then the heat absorbed by the bomb will set fire to the hydrogen inside and blow the bomb up.
This is only true of the hydronium atom as it only has a single proton to it, and splitting an atom in the traditional sense would require more than a single nuclei. Deuterium can be split as it has one proton and one neutron. Tritium decomposes spontaneously. Actually, I believe that splitting a hydrogen atom results in a nuclear bomb, but i ma be wrong. Please correct if I am. I know that a nuclear bomb has something to do with splitting a particular atom, though. The atom bomb works by splitting either Uranium atoms or Plutonium atoms, both of which have plenty of protons and neutrons that can be split in a large number of ways. The Hydrogen bomb works by fusing hydrogen atom together make Helium. There is actually more energy to be had from the H bomb as there is from the A bomb. That is very true. Also, I have confirmation that the hydrogen atom can be split and that it causes a nuclear bomb.
The difference between a hydrogen atom and atomic hydrogen is that the "hydrogen atom" represents one atom of the chemical element hydrogen. Atomic hydrogen are isolated hydrogen atoms.
Splitting the atom was a great achievement. Creating an atom bomb was not such a positive outcome of that achievement.Splitting the atom was a great achievement. Atom Bomb = Uranium H-Bomb = Hydrogen
A bomb that splits a hydrogen atom, which literally explodes the air.
A hydrogen bomb is an atom bomb; just one that uses hydrogen.
if the bomb is a fission bomb it will use uranium 235 for fuel. if the bomb is a thermonuclear bomb (fusion) it will use the element hydrogen and an isotope of hydrogen for fuel.
No. Atomic bombs use fission, hydrogen bombs use fusion (and are more powerful)
Hydrogen bomb
Yes. Later, the Hydrogen Bomb used fission/fusion.
Well there is no "Megaton" bombs, but there are hydrogen bombs in the megaton range and they are a lot more powerful. An Atomic bomb can destroy a city. A Hydrogen bomb can destroy a country.
Nuclear. At the time it was called an atom bomb.
yes its about 70 - 400 times more powerful..
First off, if you need this for an essay or quiz for class, do NOT write Hydrogen Bomb! You mean an atom bomb, which uses nuclear fission. Hydrogen Bombs were created after WWII, and have never been used in warfare. They are about the equivalent of 1,000 atom bombs. They actually have an atom bomb inside them, so when it explodes it provide the conditions necessary to detonate the rest of the bomb. So don't say hydrogen bomb. Second of all, since the Manhattan Project was top secret, only the President and a few others knew of it. Truman was unaware until Roosevelt Died in April 1945; he was informed of it when he became president. :)
