Bertha Mason, from a Jungian point of view is Jane Eyre's archetypal shadow. The loud, subversive, and sexually wanton "bad" Bertha is a Victorian nightmare, while Jane is quiet, subservient and a virginal "good" woman. Bertha is exotic and dark, physically large uncouth, and wild Creole woman who rebels against societal rules. Jane is plain and small, polite, prime and proper mousey English woman. They are the two sides of a coin, in that they both are cast in the unfortunate roles of 19th century women in a repressive male dominated society. They are both women who rail against the restrictions a patriarchal society imposes upon them. However, as the shadow side of "woman," Bertha refuses to conform to her own peril, while Jane (who does her share of little rebellions) eventually bows to society's rules and "wins" -- not only an inheritance but her man -- thus securing her a more equal position in society.
