The A6M Zero was designed by Jiro Horikoshi, built by Mitsubishi, and entered service with the Japanese Imperial NAVY in 1940. The last digit, the number "0", was named for the airplane, the "Zero". It was armed with two 7.7mm machinguns and two 20mm cannons. Cockpit body armor & self sealing fuel tanks were omitted in order to give the aircraft a lighter weight, enabling LONGER RANGE; which was approximately 2,000 miles.
