Yes and no. As America was not involved in ww2 prior to 1941 it was illegal for American soldiers to engage in combat. However, some Americans went to Canada to join the Canadian military forces. Others, pilots, joined the British RAF Eagle squadron an outfit designed for American pilots to fight in the RAF even though the US was not officially at war.
