Wow! In all my years of studying true crime this scenario never crossed my mind even once. Of course the LAPD did though. In any suspicious death investigators always start with the victims 'inner circle' or the people closest to them. Polanski was one of the first to be dismissed as a suspect. He had been in Europe for months right up to and after the murders. He was in the middle of making a movie with dozens of people to attest to his alibi.

Furthermore, Linda Kasabian, the only one present at both murders that did not take part in them, testified truthfully that the killers were Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkle, Leslie Van Houten, and on the second night of murders, Charles Manson went into the LaBianca house and tied up Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, then left so the others could kill them.

Polanski may have a tarnished image right now, with the sex with a minor charges, but he didn't kill his wife and friends.

Did Charles Manson family know who lived at 10050 Cielo Drive before they killed them?

Manson had been to the house on Cielo Dr. months before the murders looking for record producer Terry Melcher. In fact Melcher did live there at one time and he owned the home which he rented to director Roman Polanski and his wife Sharon Tate. Manson was furious after Melcher took a pass on Manson's music. So the murders on that August night in 1969 were not entirely random. The next night Manson ordered the killing of Leno and Rosemary LaBiana, their killings only slightly more random than the Tate murders. Manson had been to a house in the neighborhood of the LaBianca's so he was familiar with the area.

Our English class, which was studying the Play- went to see the film en masse- at the Playboy theatre. almost all agreed Polanski worked a ( Manson) angle to both the title character, who was made up to look lilke Manson, the (Dagger of the Mind) angle- violence and Drug abuse- and even the Three Witches- as there were three females in the Manson gang. still set in medieval Scotlant, but... look out for Droggs! The family's crimes were commited in the city of Los Angeles. According to an August 1999 Reuters news service report the house at 10050 Cielo Drive, rented by Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate at the time of the murders, was demolished in 1994.

How did Manson pick the families to murder?

Initially, the Tate-LaBianca murders looked to be random crimes. But they weren't entirely. Tate's address, 10050 Cielo Dr., was known to Manson, and in fact Manson had been to that house at least once before, less than a year prior to the murders. Terry Melcher, record producer and son of actress Doris Day, lived in the home before it was rented to Tate and her husband, movie director Roman Polanski, who was in Europe at the time of the killings. Manson expected Melcher to sign him to a recording contract and was furious when Melcher gave Charlie's music a 'thumbs down'. The LaBianca's lived on Waverly Dr., a neighborhood that Manson was familiar with. He knew a neighbor of the LaBianca's and was very familiar with the neighborhood.
