Yes it could. Their are several reason that lead to dissociation and emotional detachment for example when he or she has unrequited love they may think that if they talk or getting close to the other man\woman make the one they love hate them or get more and more far aways from them.

I've seen lots on the news that some people are tried to killed them self or lock themselves away just to prove that they love someone.
